The retirees and pensioners went to the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor in several states of the country to demand better money, a protest that took place the day the parallel dollar was located on the morning of Friday, November 9, at 17.62 bolivars. They ask Minister Francisco Torrealba to take into account some points such as that the pension cover the needs of the basic food basket, that the Social Security Law be reviewed and a bonus be approved to help them in December
This Friday, November 9, retirees and pensioners in Caracas and in other cities of the country returned once again to the streets in order to demand that the Executive pay attention to their demands for better demands, since they insist that the minimum wage 130 bolivars is not enough for them.
The mobilization of the elderly to demand pensions was called by the Secretary General of the National Federation of Retirees and Pensioners of Venezuela (Fenajupv), Omar Vásquez, who organized a concentration in the capital of the country in Plaza Caracas, where the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor, as well as in the regional offices of that portfolio so that their demands are met.
Another of his purposes was to deliver a communication to Minister Francisco Torrealba; to the regional offices of the Ministry of Labor, the Ombudsman’s Office and the United Nations Office for Human Rights to find out who can help them.

Similarly, the leaders of Fenajupv demanded compliance with the social agreement signed this year, on two occasions, with the International Labor Organization, to increase the minimum wage.
Vásquez previously said in an interview with Radio Faith and Joy that since March they have delivered at least six communications to the portfolio chaired by Torrealba, waiting for at least the head of that ministry to respond to at least one of the six points they are raising.
What retirees and pensioners ask for, according to the general secretary of Fenajupv, can be summarized as follows:
- Attachment of the IVSS to article 91 of the Constitution, which says that the salary must be enough to cover their basic needs.
- Install tripartite commission to review the value of the basic food basket
- The approval of a family bond in December and that it be paid this month
- Payment of the third month of bonuses
- Do a review of the Social Security Law
- Revise Article 3 of the Law of the Statute on Retirement and Pension Regimes so that retirement is taken into account so that the money that you will receive for the years of service to the country can be computed
“The problem is not that retirees are on minimum wage, but that 95% are like this because the institutions do not apply what Article 3 of the Law of the Statute on Retirement and Pension Regimes says, which obliges them to review the assignments every time there is a change in the scale of large salaries and wages”, he commented.
The protest of retirees and pensioners is recorded after hours prior to their mobilization, a new increase was registered in the so-called parallel dollar in which the exchange value was established at 17.62 bolivars per dollar, while the indicator of the BCV for this Friday, December 9, stood at 13.56 bolivars per dollar.

The protests of various sectors of the country, including that of retirees and pensioners, for better wage demands have not stopped. Rather, they have increased since the Executive announced the installment payment of utilities for public administration workers.
In days gone by, the Minister of Labour, Francisco Torrealba, warned that a possible increase in the minimum wage could occur in Venezuela when the State may have the capacity to maneuver economically; something that in his opinion is tied to the possibility of generating wealth through various sources –such as oil production– which in turn depends on the relief of sanctions against the industry.
He said he did not know how much a minister earns and that he earns his salary for being a worker in the Caracas Metro. However, he expressed that the income for the ministers should be around 700 bolivars. He expressed that he does not know if there are salary scales for these public officials, although he did acknowledge that they have certain privileges such as an assigned car and covered meals.
