And yes, the Secretary of the Interior became the right hand of President López Obrador. The man who was his notary was not only entrusted with the internal politics of the country, but also with the negotiation to achieve the legislative changes that he promotes in this second half of his government.
Of the three priorities he had for this second half (electrical reform, one in security and one electoral), Adán Augusto López has already scored the triumph of expanding the use of the Armed Forces in security tasks, because despite Since Morena and allies do not have a qualified majority, the modification of the Constitution and the endorsement of the majority of the state Congresses were achieved.
For Rubén Aguilar, an academic at the Universidad Iberoamericana and former spokesman for the government of President Vicente Fox, Adán Augusto López’s “placement” for the 32 state congresses is a sign that the president has already chosen him as his possible successor.
“It seems to me that he (President López Obrador) has already chosen and that his candidate, as many analysts and also political leaders think, including that of Morena, that the candidate is Adán Augusto, that is why he brought him and brings him pleasing. Adán Augusto López also joined the victory of “‘plan b” of the electoral reform. But although Adán Augusto López has grown, according to analysts, he has a weakness to be Morena’s candidate: he does not have bases in the party, so it will not be enough for him to rise in the polls.
“He has no real chance of growing. Over time it will be very difficult for him to reach first or second place, his position is to be faithful to the balance or he could negotiate his political permanence, and he also lacks bases in the party,” adds Rafael Morales.
Adán Augusto López would not be the first Secretary of the Interior to jump to a presidential candidacy. In the history of Mexico, there have already been others who have done it: Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (PRI), Luis Echeverría (PRI), Francisco Labastida (PRI), but at the same time, some secretaries of the interior who aspired to remain on the road, such as Santiago Creel.
While it is being defined whether or not Adán Augusto López is the candidate, there is already a structure in the country that is working on the construction of a platform. The phrases “Let López continue, we are Augusto” and #AdánVa are being embodied on banners and fences in different states in an effort to position the name of the country’s political officer.
