Former President of Peru Pedro Castillo ratified before the Mexican ambassador in the Andean country, Pablo Monroy, the request for asylum to the Mexican government.

“Ambassador Pablo Monroy reports to me from Lima that he was able to meet with Pedro Castillo at the Penitentiary Center at 1:20 p.m. He found him physically well and in the company of his lawyerEbrard wrote.

“We have proceeded to initiate consultations with the Peruvian authorities. I will keep you informed,” he continued.

Lawyer says Castillo is at “serious risk”

Ebrard attached to his message the letter sent by Castillo’s lawyer to the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in which he requested asylum for the former Peruvian president “in the face of unfounded persecution by judicial bodies that have become political.” .

Also, He remarked that Castillo is at “serious risk.”

Pedro Castillo announced last Wednesday the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a national emergency government, which was widely interpreted as a coup, for which the deputies dismissed him for moral incapacity. Subsequently He was arrested and transferred to a prison in Lima, where a supreme judge issued seven days of provisional prison on Thursday.

Castillo looked overwhelmed and nervous.

During the day on Thursday, the former president, a 53-year-old rural teacher with no contact with the Peruvian elites, received a visit from some parliamentarians from the leftist bloc. In the audience he looked overwhelmed and slack-faced. He was wearing the same blue jacket that he was wearing when he was arrested.

Visibly nervous, Castillo declined to use his right to defense to reply to the accusations, giving the floor to their lawyers.

“It is clear that the crime of rebellion has not been configured here” because it did not materialize, Castillo’s defenders alleged. If found guilty, Castillo He could face a penalty of between 10 and 20 years in prison.

Boluarte begins round of dialogue with opponents

Meanwhile, the one who was his vice president, Dina Boluarte, who assumed the Presidency of the country, began a round of dialogue with various groups in Congress at the Government Palace, one day after assuming the head of state. As reported by the presidential office through a statement, Boluarte convened five parliamentary groups of different political overtones, in line with his call to “work in unity for the good of Peruvians”.

At the end of her meeting with Boluarte, legislator Adriana Tudela, main spokesperson for Avanza País, explained in statements to the media that during the meeting they discussed, among other matters, “the importance of supporting and promoting a political reform to recover the confidence of citizens in the Peruvian authorities and institutions” and thus get out of the political crisis that the country is going through.

In addition, Tudela indicated that his group asked the president that her government “give clear signs of collaboration with the Public Ministry and Justice for those who are responsible” for the alleged acts of corruption of the previous administration, headed by Castillo.

Regarding the conformation of his ministerial cabinet, the spokesperson for Avanza País pointed out that Boluarte is in the process of forming his government team which, according to what he said, wants it to comply with the parity criteria and to be made up of people “with experience, with technical profiles, to manage the different portfolios in the best way.”

Boluarte, who is the first woman president in the history of Peru, has among her main challenges achieving governability and creating bridges of dialogue with the Parliament that dismissed her predecessor and is dominated by the opposition.
