Exports of this fruit grew by more than 20% in 2021. The Golden Sweet variety is the most desired in markets such as Chile and the Netherlands.
After years of decline, due to cost and competitiveness problems, the ecuadorian pineapple is getting back on the path of growth. The exports of that fruit they grew 22%, between January and November 2021, reaching $46 million.
In 3,330 hectares, throughout the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, the Golden Sweet variety is produced. This variety is the cause of the national pineapple is the best-selling in South America and that, according to data from the Ministry of Production, is already in eighth place worldwide.
Currently, around 104,059 tons are produced. Of that total, 87%, that is, 90,186 tons, were sold abroad until November of last year.
The main market of ecuadorian fruit it is the European Union. Within that trade bloc, the biggest buyers are the Netherlands and Germany. In the first case, purchases totaled around $14 million in 2021.
For its part, in South America, the destination where it is sold the most is Chile. In 2021, that country alone received $15 million in exports of pineapple. Other markets in clear growth in the region are the United States and Argentina.
The good performance of pineapple ecuadorian makes part of the continuous strengthening of total exports, which grew 31% during the last year. However, measures to improve competitiveness and reduce internal costs are still pending.
In addition, important trade agreements are also expected to be finalized during 2022. Among the main ones are the treaty with Mexico and the entry of Ecuador as a full member of the Pacific Alliance.
