MADRID, Spain.- The network of stations of the National Seismological Service of Cuba (CENAIS) Registration four perceptible earthquakes this Wednesday in the province of Santiago de Cuba and part of Guantanamo.
The four tremors, corresponding to perceptible numbers 10, 11, 12 and 13 of 2022, occurred at 04:51 local time, the first, the second at 04:54, the third at 05:51, and the fourth at 10:52. They had a magnitude on the Richter scale of 3.5, 3.4, 3.6 and 3.2; and a depth of 5, 6, 1 and 5 kilometers respectively.
Although no material or human damage was reported, they were greatly felt by the population due to their proximity, according to the official media outlet. Granma Doctor of Science O`Leary González Matos.
González Matos indicated that seismic activity around the island has been high in recent weeks, especially north of the province of Las Tunas, where it is still maintained. In said province, on November 8, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale was reported, located 86 kilometers northeast of the city, which was felt in the rest of the eastern provinces, except in Guantánamo.
While at the beginning of this week also in Santiago de Cuba there had been registered an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale.
The specialist also highlighted that the network of the Cuban National Seismological Service is working with stability and has been strengthened after installing its station no. 20 in Casablanca (Havana). Just as it is planned to establish one in Florencia (Ciego de Ávila), another on the Isla de la Juventud, and later those of Quemado de Güines (Villa Clara) and Esmeralda (Camagüey).
The eastern region of Cuba is the most prone to suffer this type of phenomena due to its location on the border of the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates.
