In addition to the fact that the institutions lack resources, an element that has contributed to the increase in femicides is impunity.

The report Impunity in intentional homicide and femicide in Mexico 2020 , presented by the organization Impunidad Cero last November, reveals that 51.4% of femicides in the country were not resolved.

To this is added that Mexico lacks Public Ministries and judges who can investigate and pass sentences.

“There are not enough judges, or public ministries to face the workload that exists due to the increase in crimes,” warns Ivonne Olvera.

In Mexico there is Alerts of Gender Violence against Women, through which “emergency government actions” are deployed to confront and eradicate femicide violence. Currently, 22 of the 32 entities (68%) have declared Alerts.

However, Ivonne Olvera explains that these types of mechanisms lack sufficient resources to have an impact on the eradication of femicide violence.

“I did the calculation and it’s your turn 500 pesos per day for each Gender AlertSo, the question is, what is enough for? What is a municipality going to do with 500 pesos? That also means that the Gender Alert is not working because it does not have the necessary resources,” she says.

The calculation made by the femicide specialist consisted of dividing 121 million 300,000 pesos that were allocated for 642 municipalities and 22 states in which Gender Violence Alerts were declared, which resulted in 182,680 pesos for each one, a figure that if divided into 365 days a year, shows that each day they have a budget of 500 pesos.
