The painter Flora Fong was recognized this Tuesday with the National award of Plastic Arts, the most important award given in Cuba to the promoters of this event.
The president of the jury, alberto lescaywho received that award last year, highlighted the bridges built by the artist with Asian traditions, where her origins lie, and her imbrication with the Cuban, according to a report from the Prensa Latina (PL) agency.

The award also recognizes Fong’s work in teaching, as a trainer for various promotions of artists in the national education system.
The jury for this year’s prize, made up of the national prize winners Lesbia Vent Dumois and Nelson Domínguez, the international curator José Manuel Noceda and the visual artist Liesther Amador, highlighted the solidity and projection of his pictorial work, linked to the essences of Cuban culture, adds the publication.
Lescay affirmed that the quarry for the National Plastic Arts Award is very rich and on this occasion almost twenty candidacies were evaluated, “all with undoubted merits.”
Flora Fong (November 8, 1949), daughter of a Chinese man and a Cuban woman, finished her secondary level studies at the Provincial School of Plastic Arts of Camagüey specializing in Painting. Starting in 1966, she continued her studies at the Cubanacán National Art School, in Havana, from which she graduated in 1970.
From 1970 to 1989 she was a professor at the San Alejandro School of Plastic Arts and has remained closely linked to teaching.
Fong is the author of the renowned series Eddies and cyclones, Tropics and the Caribbeanholds the Distinction for National Culture (1988), the Prize of the International Association of Plastic Arts (1985) and the Bolsa de Estudios award from the Italian Government (1988).
His works are part of private collections of important gallery owners and museums in various countries around the world.
After the news was released, the National Council of Plastic Arts congratulated Fong and noted that it is a “deserved recognition of the work of this beloved creator.”

His singular style, marked by drawings on nature, appears expressed in the composition of his works that recreate a chromatic variety, nuanced by yellow and blue tones, highlights PL.
In the same way, she is famous for the way she brings native landscapes to canvas or cardboard, in which tropical sensuality and Asian tenacity stand out.
The Cuban engraver and illustrator, also recognized for making artistic kites with the oriental technique, has achieved balance and harmony in sculptural pieces, ceramics, stained glass windows, and fabric designs.
