The National Institute of Statistics (INE) published the quarterly report (August-October) on the behavior of the labor market in Uruguay. The report orders the departments of the country based on your unemployment rate.
This indicator marks the proportion of people who are looking for work and do not have one, in relation to the entire economically active population.
There are five departments that registered a double-digit unemployment rate. Three of them correspond to the coast: the worst result was taken by Black river, with 13.4%. He followed Jump (12.5%) and paysandu (11.1%). These markets are suffering the impact of the exchange difference with Argentina.
The impact of the exchange difference
According to a survey by the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU), on average, products in Salto (Uruguay) were 118% more expensive than in Concordia (Argentina) by September 2022. The category of food and non-alcoholic beverages, in particular, reached a price difference of 149%.
Regarding this situation, the president of the Salto Industrial and Commercial Center, Vera Facchin, told El Observador that the exchange difference with the neighboring country “is the main reason that worries and makes the economy of that department more complex.”
The top five was completed —also with a double-digit rate— by departments of cannelloniwhich registered an unemployment rate of 10.3%, and rockwith 10%.
The best place was obtained by Flores, which registered a figure of 2.5%. The list of the best five results was completed by Saint Joseph (3.2%); Peach (3.7%); tacuarembó (4.1%) and Cologne (5.6%).

Montevideo, meanwhile, was positioned in the middle of the list and ranked tenth, after registering an unemployment rate of 7.4%.
The ranking of Montevideo
Within Montevideo, the municipality with the lowest unemployment rate was CH (which includes the neighborhoods of Tres Cruces, La Blanqueada, Parque Batlle, Villa Dolores, Buceo, Pocitos and Punta Carretas), whose figure reached 3.4%.
The worst number was taken by municipality D, with a rate of 12%. This municipality is made up of the Toledo Chico, Manga, Piedras Blancas, Casavalle, Borro, Marconi, Las Acacias, Pérez Castellanos, Porvenir, Villa Española, Unión, Mercado Modelo and Bolívar, Cerrito de la Victoria and Aires Puros neighborhoods.
