The Senate Constitution Commission, finished this Wednesday voting for the indications to the bill that seeks to grant amnesty to political prisoners in the framework of the social outbreak of 2019, being ready to be dispatched to the chamber. Prior to the vote, the commission had agreed on the “catalogue of crimes” that would be considered in the pardon, excluding the most serious events, such as cases of frustrated homicide or assaults on police personnel.
Within the catalog, the senators decided to incorporate into the law the illicit acts of fire included in articles 477 and 478 of the Penal Code, which are related to minor claims of objects in which the lives of people and damages do not exceed 40 UTM. An example of this is the barricades.
In addition to this, during the session the legislators agreed that those detained between October 7, 2019 and December 9, 2020, both days included, will be considered in the amnesty.
However, one of the big problems is that the project to date has not received enough votes to be approved and there is no agreement on the date on which it would be discussed by the Senate, which could mean that the process would remain pending until March, after the legislative recess in February.
That is why the senator of the Democratic Revolution and promoter of the project, Juan Ignacio Latorre, admitted: “I don’t know if there will be the political will to vote for it in the room, for example, this Thursday or the first week of March”, since the majority of seats in the senate correspond to the right and the political bloc has already shown itself in disagreement with the amnesty for the prisoners of the outbreak.
