Legendary Cuban judo coach Ronaldo Veitía passed away

At the time of his death, Veitía, architect of the greatest triumphs of Cuban judokas in international events, was admitted to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital, refers the digital site Hitwhich specifies that the news was confirmed by Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the National Institute of Physical Education and Recreation (Inder).

According to the sports publication, in recent days the state of health of the renowned 75-year-old coach had deteriorated, for which he had to be hospitalized. “The complications associated with his diabetes and the high cardiovascular risk marked his severity until the fatal outcome,” says the official information.

Veitía had arrived in Cuba last October from Spain, where he had been hospitalized after suffering a serious cardiovascular accident. His return to the island was possible thanks to efforts made by the Inder and the Cuban authorities, and since his return to the country, the Institute of Sports Medicine was the entity in charge of monitoring his state of health.

The Cuban president, on a tour of Caribbean nations, other authorities on the island, as well as numerous people inside and outside Cuba have mourned his death and offered their condolences to his family and friends.

Considered one of the best judo coaches in the world, Professor Veitía received the Order of Sports Merit and other recognitions and distinctions such as the status of Labor Hero of the Republic of Cuba. In addition, he always had the affection and admiration of Cubans, of his sports fans all over the planet and, especially, of the multitude of athletes that he led to the pinnacle of sports.

Among these are figures such as the Olympic monarchs Odalys Revé, Driulis González, Legna Verdecia, Sibelis Veranes and Idalys Ortiz, along with many others who climbed to the podium under the five rings and in regional and world championships, which, with the Veitía’s direction, turned Cuba into a world judo power.
