CDMX, Mexico-. “I think about how many mothers are suffering right now. How many children without their fathers and mothers. How many separate marriages and many of us are silent. Many of us cry in silence, and from deep inside comes a cry that tears the depths of the soul ”, wrote Tayri Lorenzo Prado, mother of the political prisoner andy garcia.
Through a post on his social networks, Lorenzo questioned the priorities of Cuban “justice” where asking for political changes is punished more severely than serious common crimes. “I think about how many injustices are committed daily. How many criminals on the loose, murderers, rapists, enjoying total immunity and you, yes, Andy, my son, unjustly imprisoned in the dungeons,” the woman’s text began.
Likewise, García’s mother acknowledged that at the beginning of the process she was naive and believed that her son could not be sentenced because he had not committed any crime. At that time she put her hopes in the defense of the lawyers. She today recognizes that in the Cuban courts everything was orchestrated to declare them guilty before starting the trials.
Andy García, 24, was tried for demonstrating on July 11, 2021 in Villa Clara and sentenced to four years in prison. In May 2022 he was released. But during the five days that I was free, the protester spoke to the press and assured that he did not regret having protested and that his ideas for change remained intact. After these statements they locked him up again. García was first sent to a camp for inmates and later returned to prison, where he has been held incommunicado and denied access to what his family brings him.
His family, one of the most active from the beginning calling for the release of political prisoners, has suffered constant harassment by the political police.
His brother-in-law, Jonathan López, and his father, Pedro López, had an investigation process open for the alleged crimes of “disobedience” and “incitement to commit a crime”, respectively.
For these reasons, Pedro López, his wife, Jonatan López and his sister, they had to leave Cuba and find themselves in a refugee camp in Germany.
“My scream continues”
In the message written by Andy’s mother, the lady also firmly questions the attitude of the relatives of political prisoners and the few actions that they have led in physical spaces.
“I think about how cowardly we were, yes, because our children are in prison and we are here, when we should have all gone in together and got them out of there, still facing a shot, because it is better to die trying than letting them die in there,” he wrote.
To end her writing, Lorenzo stressed that she will not leave her son alone, nor will she keep quiet no matter how much pressure she is subjected to. “Know that I: Tayri Lorenzo Prado, mother of Andy Dunier García Lorenzo, am in battle. I will never leave him alone. Does not exist penal Code, nor subpoenas, nor threats like those received these days. Nothing they can invent will shut me up. I’m still standing and stronger than ever. My cry continues and will be heard louder every day.
