The president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, issued a statement regarding the sad case of the young woman gang raped in the Cordón neighborhood last Sunday, which has shocked the entire country.
“I still can’t get out of the shock and pain at what happened to the woman who was raped by a group of men. It is hard for me to understand that some do not understand the seriousness, and the point is how she was dressed, why she went with the man, etc,” said Pereira. “How do we want to raise our women of the future? Based on fear of men? How do we want to raise our men of the future? On the basis that they have absolute power over women? No, that is not the future we want,” he added.

For the Frente Amplio leader, “it is necessary that we, men, raise our voices, they are not alone. Let’s say enough!”, and recalled that “never, but never, will we feel the fear that women feel since they were girls, with which they walk all their lives, and that fear is linked to us”.
And he concluded by stating: “It is necessary to re-educate ourselves, if we really want to change as a society. As Rita Segato said, ‘Rape is not a sexual act, it is an act of power, of domination, it is a political act’ and deserves our deepest repudiation”.
