The Human Rights, Nationality and Citizenship Commission approved the motion of censure against the president of the instance, Alexander Navarro (PRO). The proposal was introduced by Senator Philip Kast (Evópoli), pointing out, among other reasons, a “denier” conduct of Navarro, regarding human rights violations in Venezuela.
Kast headed the efforts to censor Navarro for three months. The veto was finally approved with the favorable votes of the parliamentarian Evópoli himself and of the senator Francisco Chahuan (RN). The senator Guido Girardy (PPD) (replacing legislator Adriana Muñoz) abstained, while Navarro and parliamentarian John Ignatius Latorre (RD) were not present.
In the next session of the commission, the next president of the instance must be elected. In this regard, Senator Girardi proposed Chahuán as Navarro’s successor.

“The Chilean Senate had as president of the Human Rights Commission the only senator who defends the dictatorship of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba (…) therefore, today Senator Navarro was dismissed,” said Senator Kast in conversation with 24 hours.
“This is a very deep issue, because even in Chile we have 500,000 Venezuelans who were forced from their land by the dictator Maduro and abandoned all their loved ones.”
Navarro’s response
“Felipe Kast has done everything possible to shield Piñera from human rights violations,” Senator Navarro wrote in a Facebook post, in response to the censorship veto.
“Felipe Kast has not been ashamed to admit that he has not allowed the Human Rights Commission to work in recent months, all in order to remove me from the presidency and thus install whoever shields Sebastián Piñera before his term ends,” he added. the legislator.
“The unfortunate thing is that this outcome was thanks to the old but reliable tactic of agreements between the right and the former Concertación, without the presence of three permanent members, but today Guido Girardi opened the session so that Kast and Chahuán could vote in favor, just like in 2015 when they removed me from the Vice Presidency of the Senate for summoning them to make the contributions of fishing companies to their campaigns transparent,” he added.
