According to information revealed by the Brazilian newspaper Folha, Pelé was admitted to the palliative care unit of the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital because his body no longer responds to the chemotherapy treatment he has been receiving for more than a year.
Brazilian soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, was admitted to a palliative care unit, as his body has stopped responding to the chemotherapy treatment he had been receiving since September 2021, when he underwent surgery for bowel cancer, as revealed by the newspaper Folha, based on information provided by sources from the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital.
Pelé, 82, is “receiving comfort measures” to alleviate pain and shortness of breath caused by cancer, which according to a medical report has metastasized to his intestine, lung and liver.
The Israelite Albert Einstein Hospital, located in the city of São Paulo, is considered the best hospital in Latin America and is among the 50 best in the world. On Friday, December 2, the institution reported through an official statement that Pelé had been diagnosed with a respiratory infection, after being hospitalized on Tuesday, November 29 to undergo a reassessment of therapy.

“The response has been adequate and the patient, who remains in a common room, is stable, with a general improvement in his health,” said the statement signed by doctors Fabio Nasri, geriatrician and endocrinologist, treating oncologist René Gansl and Miguel Cendoroglo Neto, medical director-superintendent of the Einstein hospital.
This statement is the latest official response issued by the health center, and despite the information obtained by the Folha newspaper, the hospital has not once again declared any change in the health condition of the soccer star.
