The Council of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) decided to open accession discussions for Argentina to that multilateral entity, the institution reported on Tuesday in a statement published on its website.
The OECD, based in Paris, specified that together with the Argentine membership, the entry of five other countries, including Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Peru and Romania, will be analyzed in a note sent to each of the heads of state.
“This decision follows careful deliberation by OECD members, for consideration of potential members, based on evidence and the progress made by the six countries since their first respective applications for OECD membership.”said the entity.
The OECD remarked that “individual roadmaps will now be prepared for the detailed assessment process provided that those countries confirm their adherence to the values, vision and priorities reflected in the OECD 60th Anniversary Vision Statement and the of the Ministerial Council adopted last year”.
The nucleation indicated that these declarations “reaffirm the objectives of the founding Convention of the OECD, to which the new members must adhere, and establish the values shared by the members of the OECD, including the preservation of individual freedom, the values of democracy, the rule of law and the protection of human rights and the value of open, commercial, competitive, sustainable and transparent market economies”, among others.

The note also notes OECD members’ commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth and their goals to address climate change, including halting and reversing biodiversity loss and deforestation.
OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormannnoted that “OECD members confirmed today that we are an open, globally relevant and evolving organization. OECD membership remains the most direct and effective way to ensure the adoption and dissemination of our shared values, principles and standards around the world.”
Later, Cormann pointed out that “the candidate countries will be able to use the accession process to promote further reforms for the benefit of their people, while at the same time strengthening the OECD as a like-minded community committed to a rules-based international order.”
Individual roadmaps for the detailed assessment process will now be prepared provided those countries confirm their adherence to the values, vision and priorities reflected in the OECD’s 60th Anniversary Vision Statement and the Ministerial Council Statement adopted last year.

The institution clarified that “as responses are received from the candidate countries to the Secretary-General’s letter, the OECD Council will consider and adopt individual accession roadmaps, which will establish the terms, conditions and accession process. and will reflect the priority areas already identified by OECD members.”
The process will include a rigorous and in-depth assessment by more than 20 technical committees of the candidate country’s alignment with OECD standards, policies and practices.
The OECD stressed that “There is no deadline for the completion of the accession processes. The result and the schedule depend on the adaptation and adjustment capacity of each candidate country to align with the Organization’s standards and best practices.”
Once all the technical committees have completed their reviews, a final decision must be made by unanimous vote of all OECD member countries.
