Petro announces that some young people detained during the national strike will be appointed peace managers

This Saturday, President Gustavo Petro announced that a group of young people who were arrested during the protests of the last national strike will be designated peace managers.

Said young people could be released from prison for Christmas, said the president from the city of Pasto.

“Hundreds of young people arrested for participating in protests will be declared peace managers before Christmas Eve in Colombia,” said the head of state.

The president also pointed out that “this government does not side with youth, social and activist leaders who simply expressed themselves by keeping them imprisoned in Colombian jails when they have the right to spend their Christmas with their families.”

Since his campaign, President Gustavo Petro has pointed out the importance of solving the legal situation of the young people who were captured by the Public Force during the national strike protests.

Earlier, the head of state revealed from the department of Antioquia that a first agreement was reached with the ELN, as part of the dialogues that are taking place with that armed group in Caracas.

“The first point of agreement that we reached with the ELN, barely a week into these dialogues, is that the return of populations displaced by that organization is allowed in the Embera indigenous territories to their reservations with guarantees of non-repetition and return”, President Petro maintained.

The head of state said that this agreement must reach the Murindó achieving the cessation of hostilities so that the black and indigenous communities can live in peace.
