Between unknown, traditional and modern careers, the UTU bets on the development of the country

The main government and education authorities of Uruguay will present the proposal for 2023 on December 9. In total, 610 careers and courses are offered for students from the age of 12 up to tertiary level careers, thus covering their entire educational career.

The courses are grouped into eight large areas: Architecture and Construction, Computer Science, Industry, Administration and Commerce, Arts and Humanities, Services, Journalism and Communication, and Agriculture.

Currently, UTU has 7,074 productive hectares and 39 agricultural schools; Of these, 30 correspond to the “alternation” modality, whereby students stay one week at the institution and another at home. In total, there are 83 technical schools, 17 higher technical schools, seven educational technology poles and five higher technological institutes. It also has a Virtual Campus.

And there are other little-known careers that are of great importance for the productive and commercial system of the country.

Specifically, UTU will take charge of 50 cabins in the hotel complex. The agreement signed with the Paysandú Municipality is for the next 10 years with the option of future extensions. In this sense, the institution will make an investment close to half a million dollars for building improvements.

This will be the first study and internship center for tourism students in the interior, in addition to the gastronomic service that exists at Parada 12 in Punta del Este.

viticulture

For its part, UTU also has the “Tomás Berreta” Higher Technical School of Viticulture, in Las Piedras, Canelones, whose training covers all the areas that make up the process of a winery, a unique fact in institutes of this type in America. .

The educational center is part of a project that promotes the productive wine sector and the training of professional oenologists, in order to promote and develop activity in the area, acting as an engine for territorial development and facilitating access to related university degrees. with the Agrarian. The job placement of its graduates is around 94%.

Students grow a wide variety of red and white grapes (Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Chassagne, and Chenin) and make preferential quality wines with an alcohol content of more than 12% and table wines with a minor graduation. The trade name is 1944.

Logistics

Within the educational offer of UTU is the Logistics option, which is taught in different schools in the country: Maldonado, Colonia, Canelones, Montevideo, Rivera (binacional), Paysandú and Tacuarembó. Students have recurring visits to the main areas of logistics operations to see first-hand how road, rail, maritime transport and more work. Logistics and Tourism are also taught on the Virtual Campus.

He also studies at the Tacuarembó Technological Pole, at the Buceo Higher Technological Institute and at the Paysandú Technological Educational Pole.

Its students are trained to participate in the productive processes of their specialty; for example, control certain parameters in industrial and agro-industrial bioprocesses that guarantee the quality of the products.

Agricultural production

Within the productive field, the Agrarian Schools have a lot to offer. The Agricultural Education Program includes agricultural, livestock and forestry courses with various specialties, as well as a dairy and cheese production school, which also aims at excellence and educational quality.

In this sense, students and teachers carry out production of soybean, forage sorghum and wheat, among other crops.

For example, the Agrarian School of Trinidad, department of Flores, planted 66 hectares of soybeans in the previous harvest, from which some 3,600 kilos per hectare were obtained. Wheat, barley, prairie (lotus, alfalfa, white clover, red clover and fescue), winter greens (oats) are also planted on his property, and there is also a natural field. It has an orchard and a tambo for the consumption of boarding students.

The students of the “La Concordia” Agricultural School, department of Soriano, also had excellent results with this year’s soybean harvest. They planted 18 hectares and harvested 3,509 kilos per hectare.

Forage sorghum, an essential supplement for livestock feeding, is produced by students of the Baltasar Brum agricultural high school, Artigas department.
