Nicaragua reports 932 cases of HIV so far this year

Nicaragua reports at least 932 cases of HIV so far this year, according to the country’s health authorities, a figure similar to that of 2021, which totaled 938 cases.

Of this amount, 49% of the new cases are registered in heterosexual couples and 51% in diverse populations, indicated the Minister of Health, Martha Reyes, on the occasion of the World Day of the Fight against HIV/AIDS.

According to Reyes, 100% of the people diagnosed with the virus receive follow-up and treatment in the different instances of the Ministry of Health.

The minister counted a total of 6,826 people who are under medical treatment for the virus.

Similarly, he indicated that the number of tests has increased from 18,000 that were carried out in 2007 to more than 377,000 today.

“This whole process is very important. First is timely recruitment, among the great advances we have compared to the period before 2007”, Reyes stressed.

Between 2020 and 2021, a slight decrease in HIV cases was reported with 953 and 938 respectively. However, in 2019, 1,118 new cases of the virus were recorded.

Despite the achievements highlighted by the Nicaraguan government, independent doctors have warned about the lack of transparency in the handling of virus statistics.
