The Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal congratulated himself on Saturday for the qualification of his team for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar, after beating the United States 3-1, but warned: “We have to do even better.”

Speaking to Dutch television channel NOS, Van Gaal noted: “We have not been good with possession (of the ball), especially in the first half, but we scored two brilliant goals. We could have done much better and we must.”

“You don’t have to be satisfied just because you won 3-1. We’re going to face tougher opponents, so we’ll have to be better with possession”, insisted the veteran coach, who justified the changes made at halftime (the entry of Steven Bergwijn and Teun Koopmeiners for Marten de Roon and Davy Klaassen) by “losing too many balls in a foolish way”.

“In the second period we started to play better with possession and from there we were able to score another goal. I am very proud, but we can do it still better”, concluded.
