CDMX, Mexico. – The office for Mexico and Central America of the NGO Article 19 denounced that the disqualifications of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador against the organization are affecting the integrity of its members.
Since the Mexican president’s attacks on the organization began, its workers have suffered death threats, attacks against their property, judicial and financial harassment, and harassment by people who watch them and take pictures even outside their homes. They have also been the target of smear campaigns and digital attacks.
In a statement, The organization, which defends freedom of expression and the right to information, pointed out that “in Mexico, freedom of expression is exercised under siege and in a context of constant aggression.” They also stated that “the stigmatizing discourse from power and against human rights defenders creates conditions that perpetuate violence.”
Why does AMLO attack Article 19?
The NGO for 15 years has documented, made visible and denounced the restrictions against freedom of expression.
