La Araucanía Prosecutor’s Office requests 25 years in prison for CAM leader Héctor Llaitul

The Araucanía Regional Prosecutor’s Office closed the judicial investigation against the leader of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), Héctor Llaitul – who has been in preventive detention since August 25 – and requested a total of 25 years in prison against him.

The head of the CAM is charged with five crimes, including incitement and apology for violence under the State Security Law; simple theft; attack against authority and usurpation.

The regional prosecutor of La Araucanía, Roberto Garrido, reported that “for each of the crimes attributed, the Public Ministry has requested a penalty that in terms of custodial sentences reaches 25 years. The corresponding fines have also been requested for the attacks against property.

The accusation is based on the evidence that was gathered during the investigation, where they managed to gather more than 70 witnesses and over 200 material, documentary evidence and other elements that will be presented in court.

Once the Prosecutor’s accusation has been presented, the Temuco Guarantee Court must set a hearing to prepare the oral trial, where, once carried out, the background information will be sent to the Oral Criminal Court (TOP) of the homonymous city to establish the date of the trial.

It should be remembered that a few weeks ago, the same Prosecutor’s Office reformed the head of the CAM and six-folded the amount of the appraisal of stolen wood that he was charged with, exceeding $400 million.

In that instance and through a document, it was declared that the defendant Llaitul participated in this type of crime, for which reason “the appraisal amounts to the sum of $425,430,000.”
