Mexico and the United States reviewed yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) the progress in modernizing the border infrastructure agreed upon by Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Joe Biden.

The United States Ambassador, Ken Salazar; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Rachel Poynter and Acting Assistant Secretary for Border and Immigration Policy Blas Núñez-Neto met with Mexican officials led by SRE North America chief Roberto Velasco for a Committee session of the XXI Century Border Management process.

The objective is to continue bilateral collaboration on key issues that affect the shared border, according to information from the US government.

This includes close coordination on important bilateral issues, such as facilitating the legal flow of goods and people, modernizing border infrastructure, promoting public security, and fighting transnational crime.

The committee applauded the main binational achievements in the matter during 2022, including the advances in the modernization of the border crossing infrastructure between both countries and the joint security operations on the border line.

It also adopted action plans for 2023, which will guide bilateral border-related efforts, many of which support initiatives identified through the US-Mexico High-Level Economic and Security Dialogues.

The committee is a bilateral cooperation mechanism created with the purpose of improving border security and promoting the economic competitiveness of North America. Since 2010 it has held annual plenary meetings throughout three presidential administrations of both countries.
