Three months after the plebiscite: political parties do not reach an agreement for a new constituent process

88 days have elapsed since the results of the constitutional withdrawal plebiscite on September 4. This Friday and after almost seven hours of meeting for the second half of the constituent process, the political parties with parliamentary representation are unable to agree on their positions and will resume negotiations next week.

The communities explained that they will take this weekend to carry out the respective consultations with their bases, and that next Monday, December 5, they will resume negotiations to achieve the elaboration of a new Constitution.

The president of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde, stated that “indeed, the positions were very distant, there was an approximation of points of view, but an agreement cannot yet be reached. But, specifically, I would say that today was a good day, still it is not possible to generate an agreement, there are differences on specific points”.

“Therefore, a period of 48 hours was given so that during this weekend the representatives of the forces with parliamentary representation carry out internal consultations,” added Elizalde.

The foregoing is due to the fact that the ruling party continues to try to ensure that the drafting body is 100% elected, with the possibility of a group of experts but that it is not binding. Meanwhile, from Chile Vamos they are intransigent with this position.

This, since the opposition is looking for a mixed formula, which includes a committee of experts of 50 members -elected by Congress- who will make a preliminary draft, which will be added to a constitutional council that will also have 50 people -elected by the citizenship- and, according to the electoral system of the Senate, an exit ratification plebiscite is contemplated.

In this regard, the president of the UDI, Javier Macaya, stated that “we have privately discussed many formulas and alternatives to reach the expected final result, which is that the people of Chile, in a plebiscite for exit, say yes to a new Constitution”.
