MADRID, Spain.- Cuban pitcher Yunesky Maya, current player in the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (LIDOM), said “no” to the call of the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) for him to compete for Team Cuba in the World Classic that will take place in March 2023.

“I am not going to represent Cuba in the World Classic. I will see it from home, I will support them from there, I do not wish them harm either, I will support my colleagues wherever I am,” Maya declared in an interview conducted by the channel Youtube “Luis Tomás in sports”.

The 41-year-old pitcher from Pinar del Río also said that he respected the decision of the players who had agreed to compete for Cuba, among them Yoenis Céspedes and Roenis Elías, but that he “acted guided by his thoughts” and “does not agree with take part”.

“I respect everyone’s opinion. I was called too. I said no, that I did not agree to participate. The one who took the step like Roenis, like Céspedes, the other guys, I know that many have come out saying many things, but we are human. In truth, I am not in anyone’s brain, I am not in anyone’s thoughts, ”he added.

Moya, who was a member of the Cuban team that reached second place in the I World Classic held in 2006, has been playing in the LIDOM since 2010. His results in the current season place him among the main candidates for the best pitcher of the year.

The island’s sports authorities, who recently began calling Cuban émigré baseball players who play in different professional series, have also received refusals, among others, from Randy Arozarena, Leonys Martín, Dayán Viciedo, Cionel Pérez and Aroldis Chapman.
