biochemist and virologist Andrea Gamarnik was distinguished as “Researcher of the Argentine Nation Year 2022”in recognition of his career and contribution to the field of science, technology and innovation in the country.
The recognition of Gamarnik was made official in decree 809/2022 published this Friday in the Official Gazette with the signatures of President Alberto Fernández and the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Daniel Filmus.
The award will be delivered by the Head of State and Filmus in the Auditorium of the Cultural Center of Science (C3), in the city of Buenos Aires.
For being recognized as “Researcher of the Argentine Nation 2022”, Gamarnik will receive a gold medal and 2,500,000 pesos as an awardas officially reported.
As director of the Virology Laboratory of the Leloir Institute, Gamarnik led the team of scientists that in May 2020 presented the CovidArthe first test Argentina for the detection of the immune response to the coronavirus.
In 2009, he received the L’Oréal Unesco Award for Women in Science, for his research on the molecular mechanisms of the dengue virus; and in 2016, she won that same prize (which some call the female Nobel), internationally.
Originally from Lanús, in the province of Buenos Aires, Gamarnik has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires and did her postdoctoral training in Virology in the United States.

In addition to the distinction for Gamarnik, the Houssay, Houssay Trajectory and Jorge Sábato Awards will also be presented at this Friday’s event.
The Houssay Awards 2022 They will be delivered to Dr. María Cecilia Gallero (Human Sciences Area), Dr. Marta Alicia Toscano (Health Sciences Area), Dr. María Laura Foresti (Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science Area), and Dr. Natacha Paola Chacoff (Area of Environmental Sciences and Technologies).
Meanwhile, the Houssay Lifetime Achievement Awards 2022 The winners were Dr. Florencia Luna (Human Sciences Area), Dr. Andrea Vanesa Gamarnik (Health Sciences Area), Dr. Eduardo Ernesto Miro (Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science Area), and Dr. Marta Irene Litter (Area of Environmental Sciences and Technologies).
The Jorge Sabato Award it was obtained by doctor Hugo Héctor Ortega (Biological Sciences).
The winners will receive a medal, a diploma and 300,000 pesos, in the case of the Houssay Prize; and 500,000 pesos, for the Houssay Trajectory and Jorge Sábato awards, according to the Ministry of Science.
