The National Civil Defense issued an alert for the forecast of heavy rain in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina and Bahia for this Friday (2). According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the most affected places should be the northwest, central and north coast of Espírito Santo, the Mucuri, Rio Doce and Jequitinhonha valleys, in Minas, and the south and south-central baiano.
According to Inmet, the accumulated rainfall can exceed 100 millimeters per day. As a result, there is a great risk of flooding, river overflows and landslides in cities with such risk areas.
In view of the forecast, the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad) operates with teams on duty to monitor the record of any significant occurrence and has already communicated the risk to state civil defenses.
Minas Gerais
The list of municipalities in an emergency situation due to the rains in Minas Gerais was added by three new cities this Thursday (1st). São João do Paraíso, in the northern portion of the state; Cajuri, in the forest area; and Uberaba, in the Minas Gerais triangle, were the last officially included, according to the state’s Civil Defense.
In all, 142 municipalities have enacted the condition since September 21 of this year, within the 2022/2023 rainy season.
According to a bulletin released on Thursday, two deaths were recorded as a result of the rains. The number of people displaced in the state as a result of the rains rose from 933 to 956, and those displaced increased from 3,248 to 3,506.
Santa Catarina
The Civil Defense also issued a warning that heavy rains will continue in Santa Catarina. According to Inmet’s forecast, there are risks of flooding, flooding and landslides, due to existing accumulations.
