An American woman taking a cruise to Antarctica died as a result of an accident that occurred on board while the boat was going through a strong stormwhile other injured people were also registered, reported this Thursday judicial sources engaged in the investigation of what happened.
The incident took place on the Norwegian-flagged cruise ship “Viking Polaris”. that a few days ago had landed in the port of the city of Ushuaia for the first time to start their Antarctic voyages using the Tierra del Fuego terminal as a base.
According to preliminary data collected by the authorities of the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA), The ship had a first incident on the high seas with a semi-rigid boat, in which people were injured, and when it was returning to the port of Ushuaia it went through a storm with strong winds, during which the American tourist died.
Waiting for more details when there is a final report from the PNA, The spokespersons consulted indicated that the woman received blows from a glass surface that collapsed in the middle of the storm.
The cruise returned for a few hours to the local pier and then was anchored in the vicinity while a legal case for “investigation of death” began to be substantiated which is being processed in the Federal Court of Ushuaia, in charge of Judge Federico Calvete, the sources indicated.
During November, three other tourists who made Antarctic journeys diedone due to natural causes and two men aged 76 and 80 (also Americans) who fell into the sea when a semi-rigid boat in which they were on an excursion capsized.
Then, the visitors were passengers of the “M/V Word Explorer”an Antarctic cruise ship of Portuguese origin that makes polar trips for the company “Quark Expeditions”.
The “Viking Polaris” is a ship 202 meters long (length) and 24 meters wide (beam) with capacity for 378 passengers.
It is a new ship built this year with 189 cabins and specially equipped to navigate in extreme areas, as obtained by different specialized nautical sites.
