The lines of research are related to the evaluation of the structure of the soundscape and the incidence of anthropic noise on Ardley Island, topographic, geodetic and geophysical surveys for the development of the Antarctic geodetic infrastructure, the International Geodetic Reference System and the of Geodetic Information, King George Island. Another of the projects refers to penguins as sentinels of anthropogenic impact and climate change in the Antarctic ecosystem.
The Minister of National Defense, Javier García reported that this is the first campaign after the health emergency caused by COVID-19, it is called Operation Antarkos XXXIX and it consists of the relief of the crew that served for a year at the Scientific Base Artigas, located on King George Island, in the South Shetland archipelago.
To fifty soldiers and civilians, a crew of 11 members is added. The capacity of the cargo plane allows the shipment of equipment, such as generators, and food, which will be complemented by other flights and the presence, in January, of the ROU 04 General Artigas ship, of the National Navy.
García highlighted that Uruguay has remained on the white continent for 40 years and is part of the list of 29 full members of the Antarctic Treaty. He also considered that our country’s participation is strategic because, among other reasons, the largest freshwater reserve is located there and mineral prospecting is projected in the coming years.
