The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, spoke this Wednesday about the request made by his government so that his chats with former custodian Alejandro Astesiano were not included in the investigations he is carrying out on the large network of selling false passports which operated from Torre Ejecutiva.
At a press conference, the president told the journalists that once Astesiano was arrested at the residence of Suárez and Reyes upon returning from a pleasure trip in Costa Rica -and not at the airport, at his express request- He called the attorney general, Juan Gómez, to express “concern” about the “personal and family conversations” that they would find on that device.
He said that it was not he personally who made the request, but that it was the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber. “After the arrest, and this can be corroborated with the Court Prosecutor, I call the Court Prosecutor and tell him, Prosecutor, they have just arrested my personal custody, of course I am concerned about the personal conversations that involve who speaks and my family”, said the president.
“And the truth is that after time, it seems to me that the best thing that could be done and ruled by the prosecutor, because one day and another, two media, at least, that I do not know how they accessed all the conversations, they are leaking information. If those chats are required tomorrow, I imagine that a judge, in this case, can request them. What has to be crystal clear is that we do not obstruct Justice or the prosecutor at all, what is more, we tried to collaborate as much as possible,” added the president.
Spying on FA senators
On the news that a company would have asked Astesiano to obtain private information from the Frente Amplio senators, Charles Carrera and Mario Bergara, Lacalle also issued an opinion.
“There is an alleged investigation or monitoring of two legislators that a company would have requested (…) The Broad Front is asked to be categorical in rejecting, there is an alleged investigation of a private company, if so it is a very bad sign that it is investigated any political leader or any person,” he said.
