The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carlos Faría, participated this Tuesday in the 113th Meeting of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), where the consequences of the more than 900 coercive measures imposed by the United States (USA) against Venezuela were presented. .
During his participation, the Venezuelan foreign minister stressed that these measures caused large mobilities and internal displacements, as well as induced migrations of the population outside its territory.
In this sense, he also repudiated the acts of xenophobia and discrimination against compatriots who are abroad.
“In our country, more than 12 million migrants have contributed to our development. In our country, there are millions of sisters and brothers of other nationalities who have been socially included and are full subjects of rights, without discrimination of any kind,” said Faria, quoted in a press release from Chancellery.
“We have not used migrants to form coalitions of countries to attack as Venezuela has been attacked with the migration of our nationals, forced to leave our territory due to the application of the more than 900 criminal unilateral coercive measures that we have been subjected to,” added.
In his speech, he also criticized the campaigns promoted by the right, to discredit and denigrate the demonym, as well as to make political use of the migration situation, to request resources in the international financial system, which is not directed to the attention of Venezuelans in those countries.
Venezuelans, Faria pointed out, “today they return voluntarily to our Homeland, after the frustration of being victims of false progress offered that in many cases became xenophobia, discrimination, overexploitation in the work day, low pay, discrimination, lack of conditions and no social security in destination places”.
“It is intolerable and immoral that attempts are made to use humanitarian arguments or take advantage of the situation of people in a state of vulnerability, not only to advance destabilizing agendas, but to profit from human suffering,” he condemned.
On the other hand, he referred to the Return to the Homeland Planwhich has allowed the return of thousands of compatriots, who have been victims of xenophobia in other nations.
“Migration is a human right, we cannot face the challenges that are presented to us alone. For this reason, we are committed to inclusive multilateralism, we seek consensus, the union of peoples with respect, sincerity, transparency, solidarity, with cooperation for the good of migrants from the countries of origin, transit, destination and safe return,” he said.
Production of 80% of the food consumed by the people
On the other hand, the Venezuelan foreign minister stressed that, despite the coercive measures, the Venezuelan people have managed to gradually recover their economy and thus produce 80% of the food consumed.
«Despite the multiple attacks, we are producing 8% of our food; We have a growing potential to be self-sufficient, ensuring food sovereignty and, in a short time, exporting food to help mitigate and eradicate hunger, which millions of people around the world still suffer from”, pointed out.
To ensure the nutrition of the peoples, real and effective measures must be taken to stop the damage to the planet and guarantee a decent life now and for future generations.
