Faded St. Andrew’s Day

Faded St. Andrew's Day

Although now few are aware that today is Day of Saint AndrewThis is a date that decades ago was celebrated by many in towns and neighborhoods, schools and clubs by throwing water, flour, talcum powder and eggs.

Those who usually celebrated this holiday remember it as a wholesome party that they looked forward to. The festivity begins the Christmas season, so it is also used to inaugurate Christmas decorations and other customs of Easter times.

According to tradition, in colonial times the Spanish used to throw perfumed colognes and powders on each other to celebrate the day of Saint Andrew, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus of Nazareth. As the Creoles did not have access to colonies and powders, they threw egg shells filled with flower water, which took up to six days to prepare.

It is said that they first drilled a hole in the eggs to extract the contents, washed them and left the shell to dry in the sun for several days. At the same time, they rested flowers in water and alcohol with which they filled the shells to throw them at parties. There are several versions of why San Andrés was venerated in this way, one realizes that the powders reviewed the one that his sandals detached when following Jesus Christ.

This and other traditions are being forgotten by the Dominican people, while others are adopted from abroad such as Halloween and Thanksgiving.
