In Cundinamarca he had an accident this Monday when he was completing a training day with Ineos. It seemed somewhat minor, but he already has his first surgical intervention.

“We hope that the surgery of the thoracic spine that is being performed under intraoperative monitoring of evoked potentials can be carried out in the best way (…) in accordance with the intraoperative injuries”, indicates the last official medical report of the La Sábana University Clinic, where Egan Bernal is hospitalized this Monday morning.
It crashed into a bus that had stopped to drop off a passenger, but apparently Bernal did not see it because he was concentrating on its handlebars.
There is no official report indicating exactly what happened.
Due to the emergency and the injuries, it has not been possible to talk with Egan himself in detail about why he ended up colliding with the vehicle, also stopped on the berm on a road of this type.
The Colombian has opted to be part of his training, as long as the team allows it, on his way to Colombia and to participate in national competitions of a social nature, and for this reason, he has not escaped incidents.
From the accident this Monday, they point out that it was an oversight and even recklessness of the rider, and lack of accompaniment.
He was in a race with a different bicycle and therefore, he was focused on the road, the handlebars and not looking at the distance of the road.
A routine workout ended up in hospital
Egan Arley Bernal Gómez, suffered polytrauma: cervical and thoracic trauma, closed chest trauma, musculoskeletal trauma and lower limb trauma.
Although he has been hemodynamically stable, other studies are being carried out.
The Universidad de la Sábana Clinic reported at noon that, “according to the results found, he must undergo surgery in the next few hours.”
And already in the afternoon, they had to perform the first procedure.
The cyclist is in the hands of an interdisciplinary team of General Surgery, Orthopedics
and Traumatology.
Until the second report issued after 6 pm, it was indicated that the results obtained so far are:
- Osteosynthesis of a subtrochanteric comminuted femur fracture
right. - Osteosynthesis of ipsilateral open patella fracture.
- Thoracostomy with drainage for hemo pneumothorax secondary to trauma
thoracic.
Once all the procedures are finished, it will be possible to determine how much recovery time the person born in Zipaquirá will require.
