What will Cubans have for dinner this New Year’s Eve?

cena, fin de año, Cuba

Havana Cuba. – This December 31st, it is most likely that the majority of Cubans will not be able to enjoy the traditional New Year’s Eve dinner due to the high prices that pork meat has reached, which has become inaccessible to most of them. of the residents on the island.

“We don’t even know what we can eat. Pork meat is 400-odd pesos. I eat anything, but this has to improve even a little for the people, because it is the people who are suffering,” laments Joaquín García Castro, a 74-year-old man.

The interviewee, who declared himself a “revolutionary”, maintains that there must be a “change” on the Island, although he assumes that the results could not be seen in the remainder of 2022.

“The first thing they have to do is leave all those people who don’t work and who live from the invention, send them all to the Island (Isla de la Juventud special municipality) and put them to work in agriculture. Here (in Cuba) out of 11 or 12 million (inhabitants) a million only work, if anything,” the old man emphasized, without taking into account that many Cubans claim not to work for the low wages they would receive.

For many of those interviewed, the Island is experiencing an unprecedented economic situation marked by an inflationary process never seen before, so a dish of congrí, cassava with mojo and roast pork could be a luxury in the upcoming festivities.

“What I get is 1,500 (monthly pesos) and I can’t buy even a pound,” said Migdalia Echevarría, a retiree interviewed by CubaNet.

For the old woman, the most complex scenario is precisely that of retirees, whose pensions do not exceed 2,000 Cuban pesos, an amount with which they must survive for a month and provide themselves with food, hygiene, clothing and shoes, among other essential products.

Obtaining food and basic necessities is one of the most difficult tasks on the island. Cubans currently have to wait in endless lines since the wee hours of the morning to buy food such as chicken, ground poultry, sausages, and toiletries, which only You can buy once a month. Its sale is controlled and regulated through the ration book and through the personal identification document (identity card).

On the other hand, given the proximity of the year-end festivities, the increase in the prices of the products offered by private workers, mainly foods such as pork, rice, root vegetables and salads, does not stop.

“I don’t know if all Cubans will be able to buy pork, because with how expensive it is, I don’t know if they will be able to, really,” concluded Melinda Maure.
