President Sebastían Piñera defended the use of the state of emergency in the southern zone and replied to the statements of the future Minister of the Interior, Izkia Siches, regarding the preservation of the measure. which pointed out that “it has not achieved the objective of reducing violence, but rather it has increased it”.
According to the President, the designation of the cause “has allowed the Armed Forces to be deployed in support, logistics, information and intelligence for the Carabineros and the PDI.” Emphasizing that the more than 2,000 officials who are working in the area have made it possible to “significantly reduce violent acts,” he assured. He also added that “it is important to be well informed”, calling Siches directly.
President Piñera defended its use and assured that “the presence of the Armed Forces allowed crimes to be reduced by 30% or 40%” and stressed that “a survey was carried out in La Araucanía where 80% asked to maintain it as long as necessary.” On the other hand, he announced that they will expand the measure again.
“For this reason, as President and listening to the people and fulfilling my duty to do everything in my power, we have decided to extend the state of emergency until at least March 11,” he asserted.
