With a record of 3.9 degrees on the Richter scale, a new earthquake was detected in the central area of the department of Florida this Sunday, November 27, in the afternoon. The incident was reported and reported by neighbors, who stated that tremors were felt and sounds similar to thunder or explosions were heard.
In this sense, the Florida Emergency Coordination Center (Cecoed) met on Monday the 28th around noon, and gave a press conference where the latest information on what happened was released.
Cecoed met with experts from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Republic, with the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet) and with the heads of the mayor’s office to analyze the information obtained together with that collected by the Police after a tour held in the area this Sunday.
The first reports indicate that there are no damages or injuries. The conference was headed by the mayor of Florida and president of Cecoed, engineer Guillermo López, who told the media that last Sunday around 5:00 p.m., at various points in the department, “an important noise” was heard with “associated tremors ”. Once the notices and complaints were received, the Police Headquarters ordered a tour of the area, and simultaneously contact was established with the Faculty of Sciences (UdelaR), to inform the seismology experts about what was happening in that area. .
The diagnosis made by the technicians, between the night of that same Sunday and the course of Monday the 28th, “allowed for a precise magnitude. López recalled that the event is repeated in Florida, since there was a similar one 18 years ago. He added that the arrival of data from a seismograph and also another from Argentina is coming, to provide more information about what happened but with a look and data with a regional-international scope. It was also concluded that the event was of local magnitude,
López explained that with the local seismographs, some gave that the earth movement had been between 4 and 4.4 on the Richter scale, then a national average is made, which is what ends up having methodological value, since it is calculated with the seismographs used in the country.
López explained that the epicenter was in the Palermo area, at kilometer 58, 5 kilometers away from Route 6, according to what the experts on the subject could collect and analyze.
