Havana Cuba. – From the maximum rigor Kilo 5½ penitentiary center, in Pinar del Río, the opponent, activist and political prisoner Jorge Luis Rodríguez Valdés denounces the sentence received in retaliation for painting posters against the Cuban regime in a town in that province.
Rodríguez Valdés, 45 years old and resident of the Pinar del Río municipality of San Juan y Martínez, through a brief telephone call made from the prison facility where he is being held, indicated that he was arrested by State Security agents on February 27. April 2022 in retaliation for painting posters against the Cuban totalitarian regime in an office of the Military Committee and later at the whereabouts of the San Juan y Martínez train.
The activist, a member of the Cuban Republican Party, specified that the posters in question read “Castro murderer”, “Raúl murderer”, “Down with Díaz-Canel”, “27N”, “Díaz-Canel murderer” and “Down with the Castros”. and the entire clique of representatives of the Cuban dictatorship”.
Rodríguez Valdés also announced that the trial against him took place on July 4, 2022 in the Popular Municipal Court of San Juan y Martínez. He also indicated that the State Security repressors used as an accomplice a woman who at the time was installed in the location of the whereabouts where he wrote the posters, and who offered to accuse him of an alleged violation of residence.
However, he clarified, that complaint was without effect in the oral hearing. Despite this, the opponent was sentenced to four years in prison for the alleged crime of contempt, which he claims not to have committed.
In this sense, Eduardo Díaz Fleitas, leader of the Patriotic Alliance movement to which the prisoner also belongs, stressed that the judges and the prosecutor acting in the trial were not the same as those who appear in the copy of the sentence. As previously denounced by the also opposition, human rights activist and political ex-prisoner of the group of 75Rodríguez Valdés has been arrested on more than one occasion for the alleged crime of “enemy propaganda”, always in retaliation for writing posters against the Government.
Rodríguez Valdés reported that by applying the laws arbitrarily, law enforcement officers are violating the right to freedom of expression as well as other fundamental rights that are supposedly included and guaranteed in the new Cuban Constitution.
