This Sunday a new earthquake with the epicenter of Florida was registered and the mayor of that department, Guillermo López, announced that he will meet with experts on the subject to address the issue.
The researcher at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences, Leda Sánchez, defined the movement as an “earthquake”. As explained by the specialist in dialogue with Montevideo Portalthe earthquake was felt by the inhabitants of Molles, Cerro Colorado, Sarandí del Yí and Nico Pérez, among other towns in Florida.
“It sounds to me that the epicenter is close to the one that occurred last year, which was the largest measured since there are records. The repetition of earthquakes in that area is due to the reactivation of old faults,” said Sánchez.
It should be noted that in greater than 2021 there was a earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale. The event mobilized departmental authorities to assess the situation.
Meeting with experts
This Monday, the mayor of Florida, Guillermo López, will meet at 11:30 a.m. with experts from the Faculty of Sciences, Meteorology and the police of that department, on the occasion of this earthquake. Likewise, for this meeting the Coordinating Center for Departmental Emergencies (cecoed).
According to López, the Police conducted a tour of the area. In this meeting, the objective of analyzing the information obtained so far will be aimed at.
The mayor explained that in the first instance, “there is no injury or damage to regret, but everything is very premature.”
