The United States announces a ban on the import and sale of telecommunications equipment and services from half a dozen chinese companies, including Huawei and ZTE
The US portable telephone market closes its doors to the sale of those products considered a risk to national security. For example, Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE will be directly affected by this measure. Already in 2021, both brands were included in a list of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that considers them “an unacceptable risk” for national security, Dahua and Hikvision, providers of video surveillance equipment, are also on that list. and Hytera Communications, specializing in radio equipment.
US authorities have shown increasing caution in recent years around Chinese telecommunications companies and technology. Products already authorized by the FCC will remain so, at least for now. LThe agency evaluates examining the current authorizationsas well as the review procedures of the announced bans.
“These new rules represent an important part of the actions put in place to protect the American people against national security threats involving telecommunications equipment,” FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement.
Along the same lines as his predecessor Donald Trump, the Joe Biden administration has a very close position on Chinese teams of telecommunications, of which it is suspected that they serve the purposes of espionage for Beijing.
Washington had previously banned Huawei from providing systems serving the US government, and also strongly discouraged the use of such equipment in the private sector, for fears that they were intervened by Chinese intelligence.
In 2019, Huawei was put in a trade blacklist that prohibited US suppliers from doing business with this company, which left the Chinese company out of Google’s Android operating system used in mobile devices.
