A goal by Lionel Messi after the hour of the game, with a left-footed shot from outside the area, led to Argentina’s first victory in the 2022 World Cup, which beat Mexico on the second day of group C of the tournament 2-0, with the second goal on the verge of the end of Enzo Fernández.
A win against Poland next Wednesday will almost certainly leave Argentina top of Group C for the round of 16, unless Arabia manages to beat Mexico by two more goals than the albiceleste do.
But if Argentina draws with Poland, they will qualify for the round of 16 as second in the group if the Mexicans and the Arabs tie. It would also do so if Mexico wins but by less than four goals. You can be left out if Arabia beat Mexico and reach six points.
And if Argentina loses to Poland, it will mean the elimination of Lionen Scaloni’s team from the World Cup.
Mexico, for its part, needs to win and for Argentina to thrash Poland to aspire to second place in the group in which the difference in goals is decisive for the interests of Gerardo Martino’s team. Mexico must score at least three goals in their next game.
Poland will be first in the Group if they beat Argentina and a draw also ensures their classification. If they lose, they will be left in the hands of what happens in the other game in the group and a victory for Arabia will leave them out.
Arabia, if it prevails over Mexico, will also access the round of 16, the tie would leave them pending the duel between Argentina and Poland and the defeat, out.
