Seeking to respond to today’s demands, the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU) –from its Salto Campus– presented the Bachelor’s Degree in Data and Business. The new career lasts for four years and can be done blended.
The program seeks that the student is able to combine business and management knowledge for the processing, analysis and interpretation of data; During the years of training, you will obtain the technological skills most in demand and used by the industry and you will be able to apply them in different types of businesses, national and international, with a solid business background.
Gimena Abreu, an academic reference in the Data and Business career, an economist and a Master’s in Financial Management, explains the profile of the bachelor’s degree: “Students will combine business and management with the analysis and interpretation of data for decision-making. . In this way, they will have the necessary technological knowledge to apply it in the company”.
Abreu stressed that the degree is designed to meet the current needs of the market: “We spoke with companies in the sector to see what specific skills are needed in graduates to enter the labor market and we concluded that there was a need to integrate knowledge.” The Data and Business degree is structured as follows: there will be virtual courses with synchronous and asynchronous activities that can be followed through the Moodle and Zoom platforms and, one Saturday a month, students must attend a face-to-face meeting at the Jump Campus.

This blended modality seeks to reach interested parties from all over the country and, in addition, to be attractive to the information technology sector. “It is expected that a large part of the job opportunity will be remote. Many jobs today facilitate the hybrid or fully remote form of work. The demand for professionals with this type of training is very high worldwide. Some employers cannot find qualified people in Uruguay and look for them outside the country, but great job opportunities abroad also arise remotely,” said Abreu.
The degree allows constant monitoring of the student’s learning process, both through summative and formative assessments. At the end of the second and fourth year of the degree, students participate in curricular spaces whose objective is the integration of the learning achieved so far. At the end of the two years, the student obtains the intermediate title of analyst in Data and Business.
After the four years of the degree –which can be accessed regardless of the previous baccalaureate orientation–, a training practice is carried out to conclude and achieve the degree of Bachelor of Data and Business. In the middle, there are elective courses, ideal for personalizing the degree according to the interests of each student, and also for carrying out the academic exchange semester abroad.
Abreu elaborated on these possibilities: “In all UCU careers there is a high percentage of elective courses. In this case it is 25%. It is also planned that in the second semester of the third year students can go on exchange to other universities in the world with which the UCU has agreements. This way, they don’t miss required classes and don’t fall behind,” he added.
Finally, the director of the Degree in Data and Business made clear the preponderance of having a high level of English: “You have to graduate with a level equivalent to the First Certificate in English from the University of Cambridge in reading comprehension. It is an exit condition. The market demands it of you and in this race it is even more evident”.
