This Friday, November 25, a modular complex for the reception of migrants was inaugurated in the community of San Vicente, district of Pinogana, in the province of Darién.
According to the Ministry of Security, this new facility, located in the San Vicente Temporary Immigration Reception Station, will allow better care for people who are in transit, and who are heading to North America, so that they have a suitable place for your temporary stay, in a humane and dignified way.
The construction of this center, which has 544 beds for the migrant population that is in this reception station, had an investment of $1.9 million.
The facilities have drinking water, electricity, sanitary bathrooms, a water reserve tank, a kitchen and food storage area, a dining room, and a clinic for medical care for migrants.
“Panama is a supportive, humanitarian and respectful country of international agreements and we are working with organizations such as the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), to give the best care to irregular migrants during their temporary passage and that they can have a stay in a humane and dignified way, “said the director of the National Migration Service, Samira Gozaine.
He stressed that Panama “has put a human face” on irregular migration, by increasing the migratory flow in the last two years.
For his part, the Vice President of the Republic, José Gabriel Carrizo, emphasized the commitment that the Republic of Panama has with the treatment of the migrant population, being the opening of this new temporary reception station for migrants, a clear example of this.
“Nothing replaces teamwork, this joint effort is what has allowed us to give a positive response to a problem in which a commitment to comprehensive care has been made,” said the Vice President.
