MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard (USCG) intercepted this Friday a group of Cuban rafters who were seeking to disembark in Cayos Marquesas.
The migrants had escaped from Cuba aboard an artisanal vessel, as shown in an image shared by the Coast Guard.
“Coast Guard crews prevented this vessel from disembarking in Cayos Marquesas on Friday at approximately 10 am. No injuries reported,” said that entity on Twitter.
The Marquesas Keys are a group of uninhabited islands covered by mangroves that are located about 30 miles west of Key West.
The information from the Coast Guard does not specify the number of Cubans who were detained in the operation, although it does reiterate the call to the nationals of the Caribbean country so that they do not try to reach the United States illegally.
The Coast Guard itself had arrested yesterday 36 Cuban migrants who had arrived in the Florida Keys aboard homemade boats. On Wednesday, another group of 19 Cuban rafters had been detained after disembarking at Key Colony Beach.
Until last November 21, there were 2,127 Cuban rafters intercepted by Coast Guard crews in fiscal year 2023. That same day, the federal agency reported on the repatriation of 32 Cubans who were returned to Cuba by the crew of the Coast Guard William Trump.
