Within the framework of the “+Verde +Agua” project, executed by the Moisés Bertoni Foundation and CONALAYPA, the creation of a sustainable solid waste management model in the city of Areguá was promoted.
Local actors from Areguá, including neighborhood commissions, representatives of educational institutions and representatives of the local municipalityparticipated in the co-ideation of the sustainable solid waste management model through different workshops.
The first session presented the context of the city’s waste management situation and introduced participants to the design process. Subsequently, collective thinking was focused towards the design of a specific solutionwhich in turn was presented in a incubation process of circular economy initiatives.
“The participation was very active on the part of the memberswho they remained stable during the four encountersconducting interviews and inquiries that allowed to enrich the proposal”, explained the consultant Maria Mersán, facilitator of the workshops.
The idea consists of the segregated management of solid waste through neighborhood commissions, connecting homes and schools with recyclers and collectorsand so join them to the reverse logistics chainbased on a circular economy management model.
In this way it was conceived “Areguá Cero Residuos”, the result of the participatory ideation process addressed to active neighborhood commissions of the Municipality of Areguáinterested in the segregated management of solid waste.

The pilot project will be implemented with 5 neighborhood commissions of Areguáof November 2022 to April 2023for learn what works and what doesn’t, adjust the model and scale it to other commissions or even interested municipalities. The goal is to give a proposed solution to the great problem of poor solid waste management and its impact on the environment.
The initiative is executed by the Moisés Bertoni Foundation (FMB) and the National Commission for the Management and Management of Lake Ypacaraí (CONALAYPA) under the “+Green +Water” project.
