Pinar del Río baseball player Roidel Martínez manages to leave Cuba

Roidel Martínez, Cuba, béisbol

MADRID, Spain.- Outfielder from Pinar del Río Roidel Martínez left Cuba in the last few hours and is in Mexico, where he will seek to sign with a Major League Baseball organization.

As considered by the sports journalist Francys Romero when announcing the newsMartínez “was one of the best talents in the country” and “has the tools and excellent physique” to prove himself in the Major Leagues.

The 23-year-old athlete was a member of Team Cuba several times, including the U-18 World Cup in Thunder Bay, Canada, 2017, and the Junior Pan American Championship in Barranquilla, Colombia, in November 2021.

He made his debut in the National Series in the 2017-2018 season. In his career in these competitions he hit .342 (119 hits in 220 at-bats).

Despite its results and to the surprise of the fans, last June was excluded of the national team that would attend the U-23 World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

This decision by the island’s sports authorities, without explanations, led the athlete to request the withdrawal from the sport in Cuba.

According to stated Martínez at that moment to the journalist Osbel Benítez Polo, was called to an office with all the coaches, where they told him: “We have seen, we have spoken, and you cannot be in the team.”

After asking the reasons, he only received an answer: “It’s that you can’t be, you can’t be, we decided that you can’t be.”

“They didn’t tell me anything. No one told me that I couldn’t be there because I did something wrong or because such a thing is being said. No, they didn’t tell me anything, just that I wasn’t on the team because they decided I wasn’t there, period,” the player said.
