MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban regime continues to approve applications from small and medium-sized companies to set up businesses on the island.
This Thursday, the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP) reported on 101 requests for the creation of economic actors that were accepted for their next entry into operation.
The official note, disseminated by state mediaindicates that of the 101 new ventures, 98 correspond to private MSMEs and three to state MSMEs.
The MEP highlights that, with the new MSMEs approved, there are 5,985 economic actors that have emerged in the country since September 2021.
Of the total number of enterprises approved on the Island since then, 5,854 are private MSMEs, 72 are state MSMEs, and 59 are constituted as non-agricultural cooperatives.
Of the 5,985 businesses, 52% are reconversions of existing ones and 48% correspond to new ventures.
“Of all those approved, 139 are part of local development projects and 13 are incubated in the Science and Technology Park of Havana,” the information added.
The island’s authorities anticipate that with the new economic actors, 102,226 new jobs will be generated in the economy.
Cuban economists warn that the approval of MSMEs does not in itself guarantee the economic development of the country, but that conditions are needed that, up to now, the State has not wanted to offer.
“The countries that have had the best results in defining their action frameworks for MSMEs are those that grant the greatest freedom to develop their functions and guarantee a rapid accumulation of capital that consolidates the projects in the shortest possible time,” said the last year to CubaNet the expert Elías Amor, one of the critical voices of the economic model that prevails on the Island.
Amor has indicated on several occasions that the success of these ventures will be marked by the level of profits and benefits that they can generate. However, he has emphasized that the 2019 Constitution itself, the governing document of the country’s destinies, does not allow the effective continuity of this virtuous cycle in the Cuban economy.
