Congress of Mayors strengthens its international relationship

With the presence of the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, the Congress of Mayors and the Training Center for Regional Integration (Cefir) signed an agreement, whose objective is to promote technical exchange and reciprocal cooperation.

The president of Congress, Guillermo López, stressed that, thanks to the new headquarters and the agreement, the body will be able to expand the tasks it performs.

The president of Cefir, Alberto Volonté, and the ambassador of Uruguay in Argentina, Carlos Enciso, also participated in the event.

The objective of the center is to promote the exchange of knowledge and public experiences related to regional integration.

The Ministry of National Defense ceded the Cefir headquarters building to the Congress of Mayors on bailment. Then these areas entered into an agreement in order to promote technical exchange and reciprocal cooperation, as well as the development of actions, programs and projects of an academic, scientific, technological and cultural nature, in areas of regional integration, external relations of governments departmental, local development, management design and public policies. In addition, they agreed to encourage continuous education, training and improvement of their human resources. The agreement will be in force between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2025.

López pointed out the importance of having a new building to improve functionality. He recalled that the tasks carried out by Congress include the management of the Unified Vehicle Income Collection System, the Unified National Registry of Food, Companies and Vehicles, the help desk for notarial certificates and the administrative management of the agency itself. With this new infrastructure, an area may be allocated to the National Congress of Councilors and the Plenary of Municipalities.

Regarding international relations, López stressed that this area integrates the international governance of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). He also cooperates with the European Union, in its second plan, with the Uruguayan departmental governments on environmental issues and small entrepreneurs. Likewise, it is expected to begin working on strengthening the border situation in the region.
