The regional director of MIDA in the province of Coclé, Juan de Dios Domínguez, in an interview for Radio Panama, informed that onion seedbeds are being prepared for their production in different parts of the region.
“The production of onion seedbeds has been carried out since this month of November, last year was the most productive year in the province where 278.5 hectares of onion were planted, where they were distributed among 455 producers throughout the province, being the sector Natá is the largest producer with some 210 hectares and in other areas sowing is also carried out in Penonomé, Ola and La Pintada with a production of over 120,000 quintals last year”, informed Domínguez.
I also explain how is the process for planting this product that is widely consumed nationwide “the seedbeds that are being made now will begin to be transplanted as of December 15 so that the full harvest begins in the months of March and April
This creates jobs for this region due to the number of hectares planted that requires labor to get the product to sell it nationally, it is considered that it generates approximately one million dollars only in salaries when harvest time arrives. .
Despite the constant rains that have occurred, MIDA continues to support producers in this region of the country “We train small producers and we have also managed to train two new onion associations in the cocle area to organize and unite because This is the only way to have more strength when it comes to marketing the onion”, concluded Domínguez.
