Regime requests 14 years in prison for 11J protester in La Güinera

MADRID, Spain.- After more than a year incarcerated, the Cuban regime requested this week 14 years of imprisonment for the protester on July 11 and 12 (July 11) in the Havana neighborhood La Güinera, Yurien Rogelio Mendez Herrera.

After learning of the prosecutor’s request, his mother, Norabel Herrera Cabrera, denounced through a video shared on the social network Facebook by the activist Marcel Valdés: ”My son is innocent, so much so that until now they had not been able to prosecute him because they did not have compelling or weighty evidence. But they already manipulated everything: the evidence and the statement, so that the court would not reject the case any further.

Herrera Cabrera referred to the Cuban government as a “corrupt and failed regime” that “invents things and you have to keep quiet.”

In recent statements to Radio Television Martí, the mother of the political prisoner recounted: “My son was taken prisoner on November 1, 2021. People dressed as civilians arrested him, without identifying themselves; they handcuffed him and took him to the El Capri station. I went and they did not tell me the reasons for his arrest. Only through a friend did I find out that it was because of the Güinera demonstration. Someone mentioned it and they caught him right there.”

Last July, this woman had denounced that her eldest son in the prison, identified as “Osmani”, was being put by other prisoners in his cell to provoke fights.

Méndez Herrera, 28 years old, remains in provisional prison at the Combinado del Este maximum rigor penitentiary, in Havana, accused of the alleged crime of sedition.
