The Nunca Más Nicaragua Human Rights Collective condemned the arbitrary detention of the Nicaraguan sociologist Oscar Rene Vargas. On the morning of this Tuesday, November 22, the political analyst was kidnapped by police officers at the service of the Daniel Ortega regime.
“Once again the regime persecutes and imprisons those who have a different opinion and in the case of Óscar René his permanent exercise of freedom of expression with critical analysis of the serious violations that persist in Nicaragua and the demand for change is widely known,” he denounced. the organism.

He also stressed that the 77-year-old political analyst —according to public information—, has health problems such as hypertension “and seven months ago he underwent an operation in which he was given a pacemaker,” for which it is feared that his health complicate with the confinement forced by the Ortega justice system.
For his part, the human rights defender and member of the Human Rights Collective Gonzalo Carrion said to Article 66 that with the arrest of Vargas the systematic policy of persecution and imprisonment of all critical voices of the Ortega regime is confirmed.
«The arrest of Oscar René -Vargas- is with the objective of imprison the word, imprison the thought and the expression. It is known that Óscar René makes a systematic analysis of what is happening in Nicaragua and puts the point on the i’s —to the Nicaraguan dictatorship—, he added.
He also stressed that “like Óscar René, other people are punished for not agreeing with the tyrannical will of the Ortega-Murillo family.”

The Collective demands the immediate release of Vargas and respect for his rights, “to life, integrity and personal security”, as well as the cessation of persecution and application of unconstitutional and arbitrary laws, and the full release of all prisoners policies in Nicaragua.
Recently, the historian had taken refuge in Costa Rica after becoming an opponent of Ortega and is now Ortega’s new hostage.
If he continues to be detained, Vargas will increase the list of more than 220 political prisoners held in the different jails of Nicaragua, to whom the Ortega justice charges common crimes or for alleged treason against the homeland.
