Lula wants the climate summit to be held in Brazil in 2025

Brazil concentrates 60% of the Amazon and as such is a fundamental green area in the fight against climate change, hence the symbolism that holding the summit there would have.

The elected president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio da Silva (Lula), proposed his country as the venue for the UN climate conference in 2025 (COP30) and announced the creation of a Ministry of Indigenous Peoples. The proposal and the announcement were made upon arrival at COP27, which was held from November 6 to 18 in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

The next president of Brazil, who will take office on January 1, 2023, pledged to carry out a “strong fight” against deforestation. “We are going to put an end to the degradation process that our tropical forests are experiencing,” she said.

He stressed that the Ministry of Native Peoples that he will establish is a measure of justice, so that indigenous people “are not treated as bandits.”

“Brazil is back”, we are “too big a country and we cannot isolate ourselves as in recent years”added with a critical charge to the current president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who will leave the presidency in January and who has been harshly questioned for his carelessness in environmental policies, something that the Government and his supporters deny has happened.

The host states proposed by Lula for COP30 were Amazonia or Pará. Brazil concentrates 60% of the Amazonis considered the lungs of the world and as such is a fundamental green area in the fight against climate change, hence the symbolism that holding the summit would have there.

It should be added that Brazil and the Brazilian government participated officially, but Lula attended the summit invited by the Egyptian Presidency of the UN climate conference.

In addition to holding meetings with other authorities, the Brazilian had talks with the US special envoy for climate, John Kerry, and the Chinese chief negotiator, Xhi Zhenhua.

Norway and Germany announced that with Lula’s victory they would resume financial support to preserve the virgin Amazon rainforest, aid that already existed before but was withdrawn in 2019 due to disagreements with Bolsonaro.
